Enchanted Mosaic … an evening with the arts

CFUW/Kanata created a truly enchanting evening in Kanata on Saturday. The Earl of March S.S. foyer was transformed into a gallery of colour and creativity with inspiring wall hangings and displays of mixed media artwork. The concert was an impressive show of visual and musical delights ranging from novice guitarists to the polished and spirited performances from the Vyhovskyi strings, the Cantiamo choir, and the Group Therapy Quartet. Exuberant dancers, a vigorous jazz band, gentle hand bells, and professional vocals contributed to a truly lovely evening that left an appreciative audience looking forward to next year’s Enchanted Mosaic.

All proceeds from ticket sales and the silent auction are used to provide scholarships to local high school graduates who are pursuing post-secondary studies.

Sincere and grateful thanks go to all the sponsors, organizers, and volunteers who made this event possible, but special thanks are due to all those who took to the stage on Saturday evening. They are:

Enchanted Mosaic Art Exhibition and Concert for CFUW scholarship program

CFUW/Kanata

Each June the Canadian Federation of University Women in Kanata (CFUW/Kanata) presents scholarships to two graduating students who are going on to university studies. They are chosen from seven local high schools, including Sacred Heart Catholic and South Carleton High Schools.

Enchanted Mosaic - Saturday, 14 November

To raise funds to support these scholarships, CFUW/Kanata is presenting its popular, third, annual “Enchanted Mosaic – An Evening with the Arts” on Saturday, 14 November at the Earl of March Secondary School, 4 The Parkway, Kanata. This event is a variety concert and art display showcasing local talent, both young and adult, as well as a silent auction.

Art Exhibition

Doors open at 6 p.m. for the art exhibition and silent auction. Art teachers Deborah Noel and Graham Mastersmith from Earl of March Secondary School and All Saints High School respectively, will display their paintings, together with their students’ creations. As well, striking collaborative aboriginal artwork painted by nine students chosen from nine Ottawa Catholic High Schools will be shown alongside the artwork of Tim Yearington, the artist-teacher who inspired the students with his native teachings.

Tim Yearington

Tim Yearington - a mixed blood man of Algonquin/French and Mohawk/Irish ancestry is considered an Elder.

He gives presentations, talks, workshops and even guides outdoor "medicine walks" on the land. He works with teachers and students at secondary schools, colleges, universities, government agencies and private organizations. Sharing his traditional knowledge is a passion that has become his vocation. Before becoming an educator, Tim was a professional artist and illustrator.

“In my work as a visual artist, I like to share more than just a pretty picture. As a mixed-blood native artist, I see my paintings as ways to help share traditional teachings and what we call "medicine". My passion is in creating artwork that helps us look into the deeper, and often darker, parts of ourselves. Based on the storytelling heritage of my Algonquin ancestors, my work illustrates the story of the ancient war between the Thunderbirds and the Serpents. These are supernatural beings that inherently carry their own medicine. In my work, this medicine is expressed visually with paint on canvas. When a painting is seen by a person, this medicine can be transferred. By taking the time to actually "see" the artwork, the medicine enters a person's eyes and travels into their spirit. A person gains insight into his own being.”

Graham Mastersmith - Local artist, photographer and high school visual art teacher. Employs a diverse mix of styles from traditional realism to abstraction. As a printmaker in university, spent many hours layering images and fields of colour in the lithographic process.
His latest mixed media images revisit the same concepts. He creates a visual dialogue by juxtaposing and layering photographs of nature and the urban landscape with abstract paint marks and washes of colour. After printing the images, he adds further layers of paint and various mixed mediums to unify the piece. Epoxy resin seals a number of his most recent works. The resin adds vibrancy to the colours and suggests preservation of nature, much like an insect in amber. Deborah Noel’s exhibit will include a cross section of old and new works. Recent works explore the Laurentian landscape in the vicinity of my cottage in Weir, Quebec. Roadside scenes in oil have been the focus of my paintings. Older works explore grid structures in graphite and colour pencil. Many of these works are based on the common denominator of one structure in repetition with variations Silent Auction heading
